Health officials call for legal drinking age to be increased to 21

NHS advisers are calling for the legal drinking age to be increased from 18 to 21 in Scotland in an attempt to crack down on binge drinking and save money.

The move would apply to clubs, pubs, supermarkets and off-licenses.

In the United Kingdom wound botulism is typically associated with heroin use, however elsewhere there have been links with both amphetamine and cocaine use.

Scotland: Attitudes Towards Homelessness Survey

A third of online Scots aged 18+ (33 per cent compared to 27 per cent across the UK) believe the main cause of homelessness is alcohol or drug addiction, according to new research commissioned by The Salvation Army and carried out by Ipsos MORI*.

*Research commissioned by The Salvation Army and carried out by Ipsos MORI. 2,119 UK adults were interviewed online between 9-13th January 2015, of these, 217 were in Scotland. The data has been weighted to the national profile of the UK population.

The Salvation Army conducted an anonymous survey this month of 314 residents at its lifehouses.

The School for Health and Care Radicals – Free Virtual School

The School is a free, virtual, modular learning programme that takes places over five weeks starting 30th January 2015.

The sessions run on a Friday morning from 9.30-11am (GMT) via a WebEx platform and are supported by study guides, Twitter chats and other learning activities (individually or in groups). Addaction Scotland begin delivery of addiction recovery services in Argyll and Bute

Addaction Scotland are committed to delivering a service in Argyll and Bute that works for the people who need it. On the 5th of January we began delivering our service, which is available to anyone who requires support or advice around their own or someone else’s alcohol or drug use. Service users can refer themselves directly as can other health or social care professionals who think their clients may benefit from our help.

Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey 2013

 Alcohol Use in Scotland

  • The proportion of 13 and 15 year olds who reported drinking in the last week was the lowest since the survey series began monitoring drinking behaviour in 1990 (4% of 13 year olds and 19% of 15 year olds).
  • The proportion of pupils who reported drinking alcohol in the last week decreased between 2010 and 2013 (from 14% to 4% for 13 year olds and from 34% to 19% for 15 year olds).
  • In 2013, the proportion of pupils who reported never having had a proper alcoholic drink was higher for both age groups than at any time since 1996 (68% of 13 year olds and 30% of 15 year olds).

Drug Use in Scotland

  • 18% of 15 year olds and 4% of 13 year olds reported ever taking drugs.
  • The proportion of pupils who reported that they had used drugs in the month before the survey was the lowest since the survey series began in 1998 (9% of 15 year olds and 2% of 13 year olds).
  • The proportion of pupils who reported that they had never used drugs was higher in 2013 than at any time since the survey series began in 1998 (82% of 15 year olds and 96% of 13 year olds).
